There is a very wet area at end of first field coming from the Oreton end. This is right by a gate and unless it has been very dry can be almost impassable. John has spoken to the land owner who has said they do not want us to do anything but will sort the drainage out themselves. The council are aware of the problem. We will see if anything happens and if not will try again.

Serious Problem
Even though we have opened up the path where the going was wet this has got worse and is now nearly impassable. John and Chris had a site meeting with the land owner. The only option is to lay a drainage pipe down the centre of the path to take away the excess water. This will require approx. 100m of drainage pipe covered with gravel. A gateway/barrier will also be required at the bottom of the slope to stop vehicles and also horses going too fast (this is next to a crossing used by a quad route). The land owner is happy for us to improve the route and would allow access for equipment across his fields if dry enough.
The group have agreed this should be a priority if we can get funding.
A quiz night has been arranged to try to get some funding (see Events).

Back of Mounts
This was checked summer 2010 by Chris and Jo and was OK to ride
Initial Proposal
We would like to open up a permissive route from the back gate of The Mounts accross common. This is a historic route and has been ridden for many years but in last 2 years has become impassible due to gorse.

Initial meeting with SWT 2 options were discussed.
Option A – Route to go back to road and then use the route of the official bridleway (K). The route of the official bridleway will need to be found and cleared. There is a very wet area on this route which will need to be drained. Should be relatively easy as it is caused by an outlet overflow from a pond which could be piped under the bridleway.
Option B – Use the route from the back gate of the Mounts which has been used for many years and used to be a suitable route. There are now 2 wet areas which will need some drainage. would be fairly major job. Some gorse clearing will also be needed.
The gate off the common onto the lane by the Nunnery needs to be improved as it is difficult to use as no room for horse to turn by the gate. SWT are happy for this to be moved and suggested moving it a few yards up into the lane. Need to find out who owns the lane. Need to discuss with Council byways officer.
Drainage Work Completed
32 Tonnes of stone provided by the council have been laid by a work party (John, Steve, Cyril, Chris). The route is now easily passable with no more disappearing into bottomless mud. Many thanks to all involved.
We will arrange a work party to clear the other end which is over grown and may need some digger work.
Work Party
Work party met smmer 2010 and has cleared the full route. Needs better signs along route
